EDA to provide data and analytics support for M-HCOP

The Meharry-Health Careers Opportunities Program (M-HCOP) is an initiative, in collaboration with the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry and the School of Graduate Studies and Research. Funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the program seeks to assist individuals from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds to enter and graduate from a health professions programs.

Meharry has a long history of HCOP initiatives, dating back to 1971. The current initiative will benefit from data and analytics support from the Meharry Enterprise Data and Analytics Division.

“We are providing data collection, database entry, and data evaluation services,” says Ed Wisdom III, MBA, associate vice president, data infrastructure and analytics. “We will also generate data reports for tracking purposes, identify trends, and make recommendations for program improvement based on our findings.”

“Previously, we did not have the advantages of data collection and analysis support for M-HCOP,” says James Tyus, D.D.S., special assistant to the dean at the School of Dentistry. “The EDA’s dashboard and other data reports will be valuable for HCOP evaluations for federal reporting and will also guide our internal program improvements.”

An EDA data analyst will work closely with the M-HCOP team on the reporting, dashboarding and visualization needs associated with the initiative.

“The M-HCOP is an important project that will help develop a larger and more competitive applicant pool of disadvantaged students who will pursue careers in the health professions,” says Wisdom. “This a rewarding project for the EDA and a great example of the impact we hope to make through partnering with our Meharry colleagues.”
